Albert "Jim" Henry Hart Jr., 94, of Vermilion, died Sunday, August 10, 2014 at his home after a lengthy illness. Jim was born April 4, 1920 in Vermilion, where he had been a life long resident. He graduated with the class of 1938 from South Street School and in 1942 he graduated from the University of Michigan's College of Pharmacy. Jim was drafted in 1944 to serve our country as a pharmacist mate in the Navy during World War II. Jim started working at Hart's Corner Drug Store as a boy firing up the furnace with coal in the mornings. After being discharged from the Navy, he returned to Vermilion and Hart's Corner Drug Store. He work as the pharmacist and owner until 1985 when he retired and sold the business to Higgins. He was a member of the Vermilion United Church of Christ Congregational and the American Legion Post #397. Jim helped to start the Vermilion Education Foundation and he along with his wife, Dorothy, were also charter members of the Eight Ball Dance Club. Jim and Joe Hohman tended the flag in Rubberneck Park across from the drug store, raising the flag in the mornings and lowering it in the evenings. He was later recognized by the State of Ohio for this community service. Jim enjoyed sailing and was an excellent carpenter, building many of the display cases in the drug store and also building two sail boats. He is survived by his sons, Peter Hart of Vermilion and James (Pam) Hart of White Salmon, WA; daughters, Marcia (Donald) Duval of Santa Clara, CA and Joan Hart ofNeenah, WI; and grandchildren, David and Daniel Duval, and Adrienne Hart. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy May (nee Wood) Hart in 2010; parents, Albert and Emily (nee Schluebeck) Hart; and sister, Jane Hart Pinkney. The family will receive friends on Friday, Aug. 15, 2014 from 2-4 and 7-9 pm at the Riddle Funeral Home, 5345 South Street Vermilion OH. Funeral services will be Saturday, Aug. 16, 2014 at 10 am at the United Church of Christ Congregational, 990 State Rt, Vermilion, OH. The Reverend Bob Richardson will officiate. Interment will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery, Vermilion where the Vermilion Veterans Council will conduct military honors.
