He had been a Lorain resident for the past seven years after moving from Vermilion. Carmen grew up in the Wheeling, West Virginia area. He attended West Virginia University, where he was a member of the award-winning "100-Man" Mountaineer Marching Band. One Sunday morning, while at WVU, he met a beautiful fellow student, Jane Slater, who was walking along the same sidewalk on her way to church. He graduated with a bachelors degree in music, and married Jane. Carmen's first job after graduation was as a music teacher in a rural town in Iowa, where he was proud of the fact that he was able to find the only available rental house in town with indoor plumbing. Carmen later earned a masters degree in administrative education from Wittenberg University, and in 1965 he moved his family to Vermilion to work as a guidance counselor at Vermilion High School. In 1969 he accepted a position as Director of Counseling Services at Lorain County Community College, where he worked until retirement. After retirement, he and Jane spent their winters crisscrossing the United States by RV, eventually falling in love with California's Coachella Valley and buying a winter residence near Palm Springs. The Masciola family were members of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Vermilion where Carmen directed the choir in the 1970s. In recent years he was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Amherst. Carmen enjoyed golf, music, painting, and was an accomplished woodworker.
