Chester E. Smith Sr., 74 of Vermilion, died Thursday, December 25, 2008 in Community Health Partners, Lorain after a short illness. He was born July 3, 1934 in Chambersburg, PA and has been a Vermilion resident since 1960. Chester retired from the Lorain Ford Plant as a tug driver in 1991 after 31 years. He was a member of the Church On The North Coast, Lorain, Local UAW #425, and was a social member of Amvets Post #22, Vermilion. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, David W. and Deborah K. Smith of Vermilion, son, Chester E. Smith; daughter and son-in-law, Rebecca S. and Randy Crabtree of Vermilion; 4 grandchildren: Carrie Marie Smith, Jeremy Andrew Smith, Stephanie Crabtree, and Steven Crabtree; companion, June Brandt of Vermilion; and brothers Charles Smith of Henrietta; and Michael Smith of South Amherst. Preceding him in death were his wife, Helen B. Smith in 2006 and parents, Charles and Maxine (nee Hobble) Smith. Friends may call Sunday, Dec. 28, 2008 from 2-4 and 7-9 pm at the Riddle Funeral Home, 5345 South Street, Vermilion, Ohio. Services will be held at the Riddle Funeral Home, Monday, Dec. 29, 2008 at 11:00 am with the Rev. Howard Crabtree officiating.
