Don Kaltenbach, 84, of Vermilion, died Monday, May 7, 2012 at Stein Hospice, Sandusky after a lengthy illness. Don was born October 25, 1927 in Fostoria, OH and had been a Vermilion resident for 54 years, moving from Tiffin. He was a veteran of the US Army serving during the Korean War as a corporal. Don worked as the Principal for Lake Elementary School, Vermilion for 24 years, retiring in 1982. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Vermilion, Ohio Retired Teachers Association (ORTA), and Erie County Teachers Association. Don enjoyed gardening, yard work, playing bridge and eurchre, traveling, and baking bread from scratch. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Julia (nee Guernsey) Kaltenbach of Vermilion; daughter, Karen (Andrew) Ayers of Maumee; son, Don (Beth) Kaltenbach Jr. of Brunswick; and grandson, Sean Kaltenbach. He was preceded in death by his parents, Glynn J. and Leone (nee Claypool) Kaltenbach. A memorial service will be held Thursday May 10, 2012 at 11 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, 3747 Liberty Ave, Vermilion, OH 44089. Pastor Mark Bogen will officiate. Graveside services will be held Thursday, May 10, 2012 at 2 pm at Rugby Cemetery with The Vermilion Veterans Council conduct military honors.
