Franklin E. Mayer, 93, of Vermilion, passed Wednesday, July 6, 2011 at New Life Hospice of St. Joseph after a lengthy illness. Franklin was born May 22, 1918 in Vermilion and has been a lifelong resident. Franklin worked as a foreman in the pressroom for 43 years for Wakefield Brass then ITT, Vermilion. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Vermilion where he served as an usher and was a member of the Knights of Columbus. He was a charter member of the Vermilion Fish and Game; a former member of AMVETS Post 22, and the Dad's of VFW Post7576. He was a member of the West River Coon Hunters Club and enjoyed hunting, fishing, going to the Sandusky Speedway and plowing gardens in the spring. He was an avid sports fan. He is survived by a daughter with whom he made his home, Shirley Mayer (Don Hochule) of Vermilion; sons, Gary (Marty) Mayer of Norwalk, Russell ( Liz ) Mayer, Ronald ( Beth ) Mayer and Mark (Cathy) Mayer all of Vermilion; 18 grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren; 2 great great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded-in-death by his wife, Lucille Rose (nee Knispel) Mayer on August 16, 1991; his parents, Joseph & Anna (nee Roth) Mayer, sisters, Anna Bringman, Josephine Beursken, Elizabeth Marks, Dorothy Burke and Mary Beursken, and his brothers, John, William, Peter, Nicholas, Arthur and Andrew Mayer, grandson, Lucas Mayer and great grandson, Korban Mayer. The family will receive friends on Sunday, July 10, 2011 from 3 -7 pm at the Riddle Funeral Home, 5345 South Street, Vermilion where a Knights of Columbus Service will be held at 6:30 p.m.. Prayers will be said on Monday, July 11, 2011 at 10:30 am followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 am at St. Mary Catholic Church, 731 Exchange Street, Vermilion. Father Ronald Brickner will officiate. Inurnment will be Friday, July 15, 2011 at 11 am at Maple Grove Cemetery, Vermilion.
