George Newton Burley, OD, 88, of Vermilion, died Wednesday, December 13, 2006 in New Life Hospice Center of St. Joseph, Lorain after a 4 month illness. He was born March 20, 1918 in Crooksville, Ohio. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corp serving during WWII. He was a graduate of The Ohio State University and Southern College of Optometry, Memphis, in 1949. He started his practice in Lorain in 1950. After 2 years, he moved his practice to Vermilion where he practiced over 50 years. Dr. Burley was a member of the American Optometric Association, the Ohio Optometric Association and the Lorain County Optometric Association. He was a member of the United Church of Christ Congregational, Vermilion, AMVETS Post 22, Vermilion, the American Legion Post 397, and a former member of the Vermilion Lions Club and the 8 Ball Dance Club. He enjoyed boating, flying and had a pilot's license. Survivors include his wife of 13 years, Roberta "Bobbie" (nee Bay); a daughter, Shari Beckwith; a son, Dr. R. Michael Burley all of Vermilion; 8 grandchildren; 1 great grandchild and twin sister, Margaret Buchholtz of Columbus. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Ann E. Burley on June 30, 1989 and two brothers, Robert and Wilson Burley. Friends may call Saturday, December 16, 2006 from 11 a.m. until the time of a funeral service at 1 p.m .at the Riddle Funeral Home, 5345 South Street, Vermilion, Ohio. The Reverend Wendell Brooker, pastor of the United Church of Christ, will officiate. The Vermilion Veterans Council will conduct military honors. Interment will be Tuesday, December 19, at 12 noon at the Crooksville Harrison Township Cemetery, Perry County, Ohio. Memorial contributions are suggested to the United Church of Christ, P.O.
