Gilbert Velasquez, 79, of Vermilion, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 17, 2024, at O'Neill Healthcare North Ridgeville after a lengthy illness.
Born on June 20, 1945, in Mercedes, Texas, Gilbert became a cherished part of the Vermilion community, residing there for 39 years after moving from Birmingham.
He began his career as a pipe fitter with U.S. Steel, where he worked for 16 years before transitioning to Ford Motor Company, where he served at both the Lorain and Brook Park locations. After 20 dedicated years, he retired in 2007.
Gilbert was a member of St. Mary Catholic Parish in Vermilion and belonged to UAW Local #425. A lifelong car enthusiast, he took great joy in attending classic car shows, where he could share his passion with others.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 39 years, Sharon (née Akers) Velasquez of Vermilion; his daughter, Stacie Velasquez of Avon; stepdaughters, Carrie (Dale) Jenkins of Concord, NC, and Sally (Greg) Breeding of Amherst, OH; grandchildren, Christopher, Tyler, Samantha, Gregory II, Gabrielle, Dennis, Kaleb, Tanner, Dylan; three great-grandchild; his brother, Joe (Peggi) Velasquez of Vermilion; and his sisters, Elizabeth (John) Roman of Houston, TX, and Jeanette (Tim) Garcia of Wellington, OH.
Gilbert was preceded in death by his parents, Eudaldo and Mary Grace (née Pena) Velasquez,. and brother, Arthur Gene Velasquez.
A graveside service will take place at Maple Grove Cemetery on Monday, September 23, 2024 at 11:00 with Pastor Dale Jenkins officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to St. Mary Catholic Parish, 731 Exchange Street, Vermilion, OH 44089.
