Herbert E. Elgar, 89, of Vermilion, passed away Sunday, February 3, 2019 at Mercy New Life Hospice following a lengthy illness. Herbert was born May 25, 1929 in Lorain, Ohio. He had been a Vermilion resident for the past 50 years moving from Amherst. He was a veteran of the US Coast Guard. Herbert retired as a machinist for Thew Shovel/Koehring Fabricating and Buckeye Fabricating. He also co-managed Westwood Mobile Home Park. He enjoyed boating, being near the water, and socializing with his friends. He was a member of Amvets Post #22, Charter Member of Beaver Creek Boat Club, and the Coast Guard Auxillary. He is survived by his son, Bert (Judy) Elgar of Amherst; granddaughters, Lisa (Ray) Dietsche, Sheri (Shawn) Luster, and Sandy (Bob) Duplay; and 4 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Ann (nee Pruzek) Elgar; son, Timothy Elgar; parents, Homer and Minnie (nee McCormick) Elgar; brother, Neil Elgar; and sister, Constance Peters. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, February 6, 2019 from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm at the Riddle Funeral Home, 5345 South Street, Vermilion, Ohio. Funeral services for Herbert and his son, Timothy who passed away December, 2018 will be Thursday, February 7, 2019 at 11:00 am at the funeral home. Chaplain Jim Smucker will officiate. Military Honors will be presented by the Vermilion Veterans Council just prior to the funeral service. Interment will follow in Elmwood Cemetery, Lorain, Ohio.
