Jean Mae Spayd (nee Hummel), 85, of Vermilion, died Monday, January 9, 2012 at Kingston of Vermilion after a lengthy illness. She was born December 12, 1926 in Shamokin, PA, and had been a Vermilion resident for the past 38 years moving from Elyria. Jean graduated from MB Johnson School of Nursing, Elyria and had been a nurse for 35 years retiring in 1985. She worked as an RN for Community Hospital, Lorain and then as a Geriatric Nurse Supervisor at Ohio Extended Care, Amherst Manor, Kingston of Vermilion, and Shields Nursing Home, Lorain. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Vermilion; and the Pennsylvania German Society for over 20 years. She enjoyed quilting, crafts, reading, spending time with her grandchildren, and she loved her cats and dogs. She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Donald Spayd of Avon Lake; son, Gregory (Nichole) Spayd of Corpus Christi, TX; daughters, Barbara (Jeffrey) Noss of Lakewood, Donna Spayd of Cleveland, and Dolly (Dave) Camp of Wesley Chapel, FL; 13 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great grandchildren; and a sister, Sandra Ritchie of The Villages, FL. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Harriet Emma (Kramer) Hummel; brother, Ralph Hummel and sister, Mariolyn Anita Shaffer. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, January 10, 2012 from 4-8 pm at the Riddle Funeral Home, 5345 South Street Vermilion Ohio. Funeral services will be Wednesday, January 11, 2012 at 10:00 am at the funeral home. The Reverend Donald Resecker will officiate. Interment will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery, Vermilion.
