Loren J. Bachman

Loren J. Bachman, 82 of Vermilion, died Wednesday, March 11, 2009 in the Cleveland Clinic Foundation under Hospice care. He was born September 13, 1926 in Amherst and has been a life long Vermilion resident. He graduated from Vermilion High School in 1944 and began working with a trucking company for several years prior to starting B&B Construction Co. General Contractors which he co-owned for 30 years with Kenny Bell. He was a partner in Tiffany Inc. and later returned to construction work with his son Loren Jr. In 1987 he began working for Romps Water Port and retired after 15 years of service. On Feb. 28, 2003, the day of his retirement, Mayor Davis gave him a Proclamation, claiming that day as "Loren Bachman Day". He was well know for his excellent craftsmanship, constructing many well know Vermilion landmarks including the Sailor Loft, Erie Co. Bank (now Key Bank), Amvets (now the police station), remodeled McGarvey's Restaurant, and many building for Romp's Water Port. He was a member of the German American Club, Lorain, and a life member of Amvets Post #22, Vermilion. Survivors include his wife of 34 years, Gisela Margret Bachman (nee Schmidt) son, Loren Bachman Jr. of Huron, daughters: Elizabeth and Jim Sharpe of Novato, CA, Margaret and Greg Starr of New Philadelphia, OH, Kathy and John Viton of Moorhead, KY, and Christine and John Henry of Charleston, SC; 6 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; step-daughter, Christiana Lane of Wellington, step-sons, David Lane of Wellington and Michael Lane of Defiance, and a brother, Elton Bachman of Laughlin, NV. Preceding him in death were his parents, George B. and Margaret (nee Emmerick) Bachman. Friends may call Sunday, March15, 2009 from 5-9 pm at the Riddle Funeral Home 5345 South St. Vermilion. Friends may also call Monday, March 16, 2009 from 10 am until the time of funeral services at 11:00 am at the Riddle Funeral Home. Rev. Jim Sharpe (son-in-law) will officiate. Interment will follow in Rugby Cemetery, Brownhelm Twp.
