Maria J. Hathaway (nee Vander Maelen), 87, of Vermilion, died Saturday, July 11, 2009 in the Rehabilitation and Nursing Center at Firelands, New London after a short illness. She was born October 2, 1921 in Medford, Massachusetts and had been a Vermilion resident since 1959 moving from Massachusetts. Maria graduated from Medford High School and attended Boston Business School. She had worked for Fanny Farmers, Norwalk, Lake Erie Drive Inn, Vermilion, and the American Restaurant Association through the Ford Motor Cafeteria in Lorain. She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Vermilion and a life member of the Amvets Post #22 Auxiliary. She enjoyed bowling, cooking, caring for animals, and spending time with her family. Survivors include her sons, Calvin C (Sarah) Hathaway Sr. of Vermilion and Daniel H. (Renee) Hathaway of Edmonton, KY; daughters: Patricia (Tom) Mericle of Lakeland, FL, Clementine (Thomas) Bober of Norwalk, Mary Kalizewski of Norwalk, and Catherine (Mark) Haines of Wellington; 22 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death were her husband Calvin Hathaway in 1995; parents, Camiel and Clementina (nee Geleyen) Vander Maelen; and her brother Peter Vander Maelen. Friends may call Wednesday, July 15, 2009 from 4-7 pm at the Riddle Funeral Home, 5345 South Street, Vermilion, Ohio. Prayers will be said at the funeral home on Thursday, July 16, 2009 at 11:00 am followed by a 11:30 am Mass of Christian Burial at St Mary Catholic Church, 731 Exchange St. Vermilion with Father Jim Holmer officiating. Interment will follow in Maple Grove Cemetery, Vermilion.
