Mario J. Rini, aged 95, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 14, 2024, at his residence in Vermilion
following a short illness.
Born on June 25, 1928, in Cleveland, OH, Mario embraced Vermilion as his home for the last 51 years,
having initially spent summers there before permanently relocating from Cleveland.
He was a proud alumnus of St. Ignatius High School and served his country as a member of the US Army's Artillery Battalion during the Korean War. Did you know he was a cook in the Army? Mario's entrepreneurial spirit was evident throughout his life. His family owned one of the original stands at Cleveland's West Side Market, and he contributed to the construction industry with R.P. Carbone in Cleveland. Moreover, Mario's legacy includes the
development and ownership of Mario's Landing Marina in Vermilion, a venture he nurtured from its humble
beginnings in a swampy area to a thriving marina.
A devout member of St. Mary Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus, Mario also engaged with his
community through memberships in AMVETS Post #22 and the Olympic Outing Club. He was a member of the
Vermilion Board of Education, Vermilion Parks Board, and Vermilion High School Booster Club. His marina
sponsored many youth athletic programs in the community. He was also part of the icebreaker team
that broke up winter's ice on the Vermilion River. Mario found joy in spending time with his family. He
loved sharing words of wisdom and life lessons and stories-and then the same stories over and over
again. After retirement, Mario and June wintered at their home in Estero, Florida. Many of their grandchildren
enjoyed visiting them during spring break where their condo was always action central.
Mario is survived by his sons Timothy, Thomas (Donna), Mario, Michael (Colleen), and Joseph (Cassey) Rini, and daughters Tina Swinehart, Anne (Jack) Maiden, Peggy (Bob) Innes, Maria Stafford, and Patty (John) Augustine. He leaves behind 26 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and his brother, Victor Rini, of Mansfield.
Mario was preceded in death by his beloved wife, June, his parents, Joseph and Antoinette "Lena" Rini, sisters, Antoinette Rini and Arlene Gregerson, and his son-in-law, Jim Swinehart.
Family and friends are invited to pay their respects on Tuesday, May 21, 2024 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the
