Rocelia C. Smith (nee White), 85, of Vermilion, passed away on Thursday, September 12, 2024, at New Life Hospice after a brief illness.
Born on November 7, 1938, in Lorain, Ohio, Rocelia had been a cherished resident of Vermilion for the past 62 years, following her move from Lorain.
Throughout her life, Rocelia devoted herself to nurturing children through her in-home daycare, leaving a lasting impact on the many young lives she touched. She was a dedicated member of the Madeleine Chapter #204 O.E.S. and a life member of the VFW Post #7576. Rocelia also found spiritual community at The Chapel in Sandusky. Her favorite pastimes included playing BINGO and cherishing moments with her grandchildren, whom she adored.
Rocelia leaves behind a loving family, including her sons, John Churchhill, Lewis Smith, and Christopher Smith; her daughters, Jamie Casey and Candice Johnson; her grandchildren: John II, Paul, Phillip, Leigh, Eliza, Jayden, Jahmell, Shamar, and Shakeem; as well as numerous great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Virginia Yepko.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Douglas Smith; her parents, James Clayton and Rocelia Catherine White (nee Mead); her grandson, Neal Clayton Johnson; and her brothers, James and David White.
A private graveside service will be held at Maple Grove Cemetery in Vermilion.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Vermilion Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7576, 7576 Poorman Road, Vermilion, OH 44089.
