Whitten G. Yates, 87, of Vermilion, passed away unexpectedly Friday, October 20, 2017 at his home. Whitten was born May 23, 1930 in Grundy, VA, and had been a Vermilion resident for the past 57 years moving from Virginia. Before his retirement from the Ford Motor Co., he worked as a coal miner in VA. He enjoyed gardening, hunting, and was a hobbyist wine maker. He is survived by his daughters, Jennifer (Donald) Kurth and Susan (Anthony) White; sons, Russell (Vicki) Yates and Robert (Ruth) Yates; grandchildren, Justin, Rachel, Ashley, Wesley, Nicholas, Mason, Crystal, and Brooke; great-grandchildren, Gavin, Aidan, Presley, Miley, Payton, Titan, Blakely, Gabriel, and Luke; and sisters, Imal Yates, Edith Deel, and Lena Adkins. He was preceded in death by his wife, Larnia G. Yates (nee Deel); parents, Bart and Josie (nee Deel) Yates; and brother Richard Yates. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, October 25, 2017 from 4-8 pm at the Riddle Funeral Home, 5345 South Street, Vermilion, Ohio. Funeral services will be Thursday, October 26, 2017 at 11:00 am at the funeral home. The Reverend John Brandt will officiate. Interment will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery, Vermilion.
