Alma Helen Spivak (née Kellogg), 104, formerly of Lorain, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, at the Ohio Veterans Home following a lengthy illness.
Born on September 20, 1921, in Trenton, Ontario, Canada, Helen made her home in Lorain in 1992 after relocating from Fulton, New York.
A proud member of the Greatest Generation, Helen honorably served her country in the United States Navy W.A.V.E.S. during World War II. Following her military service, she worked in the Business Office for the Fulton Consolidated School District until her retirement in 1983.
Helen was a devoted member of the Episcopal Church in Lorain and was active with AARP. She generously gave her time as a volunteer with Community Health Partners and found great joy in serving others. An accomplished seamstress, she also enjoyed reading, volunteering, and spending time with her family.
She is survived by her loving daughter, Karin Briggs of Vermilion; her son, Mark Stephen Spivak of Boxford, Massachusetts; her grandchildren, Melissa (Todd) Phillips and Ryan (Stephanie) Briggs; and cherished great-grandchildren, Cade, Harper, Daniel and Adelyn.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Stephen Spivak; her parents, Chauncey Orvill and Jessie (née Pomeroy) Kellogg; her sisters, Leola Harper, Iowla Runge, and Greta King; her brothers, Louis Kellogg and Earl Kellogg; her son-in-law, Brian Briggs and her daughter-in-law, Jill D. Kanter.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, July 22, 2026 from 12:00 Noon until the time of the funeral service at 1:00 p.m. at the Ohio Veterans Home Chapel, 3416 Columbus Avenue, Sandusky, Ohio 44870. Military honors will be presented following the service. Chaplain Randy Barlow will officiate. Interment will take place at Onondaga County Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Syracuse, New York.
