Andrew P. Cherney, 85, of Vermilion, died Monday, November 8, 2010 at his home after a short illness. Born February 7, 1925 in Lorain, he had been a Vermilion resident for the past 52 years. Andy served as a Seaman with the U.S. Coast Guard, and was a veteran of the United States Army and Army Reserves, serving as a medical technician with the Army Medical Corp in Korea. Andy worked as a carpenter and was admitted as a member of the Carpenters Local #705, Lorain. He worked out of this local union for about 25 years and from there he continued his trade for 10 years in the maintenance department at Lorain Community Hospital. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Vermilion. His family owned and operated a mobile trailer park on Broadway in Lorain years ago and his interest in campers became a hobby for him. He enjoyed the outdoors, campfires and animals. Survivors include his wife, June Cherney (nee Hartle) of Vermilion, and sons, Dan, Ron and Jerry of Vermilion. He was preceded in death by son, Tom,, 1981; parents, John and Mary (nee Hudak) Cherney; brothers, John, Jr. Edward, Joseph, Michael, Frank, Henry, Elmer and George and sisters, Veronica Snezak, Sister Mary Virginia (Camilla) Cherney, Josephine Scheithauer and Margaret Kish. Friends may call at the Riddle Funeral Home, 5345 South Street, Vermilion on Thursday, Nov. 11, 2010 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.. Prayers will be said at the funeral home Friday, Nov. 12, 2010 at 10 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church, 731 Exchange Street, Vermilion. Father Ron Brickner will officiate. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Vermilion. The Vermilion Veterans Council will conduct military honors.
