Arthur Harold Gabel Jr.,"Sonny", 76, of Vermilion, died Wednesday, June 24, 2009 at his home. The Lord called him home to Heaven with his wife and children by his side. He was born November 12, 1932 in Cleveland and had lived in Sheffield Lake before moving to Vermilion. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving from 1965-1985 during the Korean Conflict on the USS Corduba and the USS Papoga. He worked at Lake Terminal Railroad, Lorain. He then worked in the paint department for Ford Motor, Lorain from 1965-1985. He worked for Industrial Security in Lakewood first as head of security at Fairview Hospital 1985-1989 then as head of security at Kirby manufacturing in Lakewood from 1989-1995. He attended Wilbur Wright and West Tech High Schools in Cleveland. He was a former member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Amherst and member of the UAW. He enjoyed woodworking and completed many wood sculptures. He loved eagles, long drives in the car, assembling model cars, and he collecting National Mint model cars. Survivors include his wife of 28 years, Darla (nee Peters); sons, Raymond Walter Gabel of Hackensack, NJ, Arthur H. (Lynn) Gabel III of Wilmington, Delaware , Gino Lewis Gabel of Sarasota, FL, James (Tammy) Edward Gabel of Vermilion , Mario (Theresa) Francisco Gabel of Lorain; daughter, Lucia "Dodie" (Michael) Bellisario of Sheffield Lake, Carmella (Bill) Marie Johnson of Jacksonville, FL, Angel Gabel of Vermilion; several grandchildren and great grandchildren. Preceding him in death were his parents, Arthur H. and Jewel M. (nee Werage) Gabel, Sr.; his first wife, Shirley (nee Gans) in 1972; son, Anthony Gabel in 2000; daughters, Julie and Theresa in 1964; and his best friend, William Ditterbrand, 2005. Friends may call Monday, June 29, 2009, 2-5 pm and Tuesday, June 30, from 11-1 pm at the Riddle Funeral Home, 5345 South Street, Vermilion, Ohio. Services will be held at the Riddle Funeral Home, Tuesday, June 30, 2009, at 1 p.m. The Reverend Myrtle Eppler will officiate. Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain. The Vermilion Veterans Council will conduct military honors.
