Barbara Halliwell

Barbara J. Halliwell (née Schmitz), age 88, of Birmingham, passed away peacefully at her home on Sunday, June 9, 2024, following a brief illness.

Barbara was born on April 12, 1936, in Elyria, OH. She spent her early years in Elyria, graduating from Elyria Catholic in 1954, before moving to Sheffield Lake. She had been a cherished member of the Birmingham community for the past 54 years.

As a devoted member of St. Mary Catholic Parish in Vermilion, Barbara served as a Eucharistic Minister. She enjoyed sharing lunches with her classmates, attending UAW retiree meetings, reading, crocheting, flower gardening, cheering on the Tribe, and traveling with her beloved husband. Barbara also served as a dispatcher for the Florence Township Fire Department in the past.

Barbara is survived by her sons, Raymond "Skip" (Darlene) Halliwell Jr. of Birmingham, and David (Becky) Halliwell of Norwalk; daughters, Cindy (Steve) Brown of Brooklyn, Gail (Kelly) Walker of Vermilion, and Laurie (Donnie) Lee of Birmingham; 9 grandchildren; 2 step-grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Raymond J. Halliwell Sr., in 2021; her parents, Henry and Florence (née York) Schmitz; her brothers, Edwin and Kenneth Schmitz; and her sister, Lois Remy.

The family will receive friends on Monday, June 17, 2024, from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Riddle Funeral Home, 5345 South Street, Vermilion, OH. Prayers will be said at the funeral home on Tuesday, June 18, 2024, at 10:00 am, followed by a 10:30 am Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary Parish, 731 Exchange Street, Vermilion, OH 44089. Interment will follow at Birmingham Cemetery, Birmingham.
