Bronislaw "Bruno" Krol, 89, of Lorain, passed away Thursday, March 31, 2011 at New Life Hospice Center, Lorain after a lengthy illness. Bruno was born July 26, 1921 in Zawada, Poland, to the late Jan and Maria (nee Dyrkowna) Krol and left there at the start of W.W. II. He and his family were captured by the Russians and kept in Siberia for 18 months. They were freed by the Polish Exile Treaty, and he was then drafted into the Polish Army which eventually came under British Command. He served as a half-track operator during W.W.II from April of 1942 to November of 1947, and was wounded in action at Caen during the battle of Normandy in 1944. He also served with the Polish Resettlement Corp. from 1947 to 1949. He recieved the 1939/45 Star, the France and Germany Star, the Defense Medal, and the War Medal. He earned a degree from the Balham & Tooting College of Commerce in 1949, and on an act of Congress under President Truman was allowed to come to America. In 1951 he came over on the Queen Mary, an experience he said he would never forget. Bruno found employment with Lorain Products as a coil winder and retired in 1986 after 35 years of service. He was a life member of the Polish Legion of American Veterans Post #38, and the United Polish Club, both in Lorain, and was a member of the Lorain Senior Center. Bruno enjoyed traveling and was a world traveler. He also enjoyed caring for his rental properties. On June 23, 1951 Bruno married Celestine (nee Prosowski) and she preceded him in death in December of 1988. He is survived by his son John Krol of Wakeman; daughter, Florence (Paul) Collins of Vermilion; sister, Czeslawa Budzinska of Poland; grandchildren Veronica Boyle, Matthew, and Jesse Collins. Along with his wife, and parents he was preceded in death by a son Christopher Krol; brothers Rev. Christopher Krol, Frederyk Krol, Zygmunt Krol, and Boleslaw Krol; sister Kszawera Krol. The family will receive friends at 9:00 A.M. Saturday, April 2nd at the Dombrowski-Riddle Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 1939 Oberlin Avenue Lorain, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 A.M. at Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church. The Reverend Fr. Robert J. Glepko will officiate. Interment with military honors will follow at Calvary Cemetery. The family suggests memorial contributions to the Alzheimers Association 2500 N.
