Charles Michalec, 86, of Vermilion, died Friday, July 30, 2010 at his home after a lenghty illness. Born May 26, 1924 in Trumbull County, Ohio, he had been a Vermilion resident since 1967 moving from Lorain. He was a veteran of the United States Army serving during WWII in the Pacific Theatre of Operations. Charles worked for U.S. Steel Corp. as a foreman in the coke plant retiring in 1982 after 34 years of service. He attended Kent State University where he met his wife and was a member of the VFW Post #7576, Vermilion. He enjoyed Civil War history, woodworking, furniture making, animals, gardening and travel. He had contributed to the Civil War Trust, Southern Poverty Law Center and many native American causes including educational funding. Survivors include his son, Brian Michalec, Albuquerque, New Mexico; a daughter, Madelaine Berkowitsch, Vermilion; a granddaughter, Catherine (Kevin) Butler, Lakewood; a great granddaughter, Agnes Butler; a sister, Helen Reeser, of Florida; and several nieces and nephews who dearly loved their Uncle Charlie. He was preceded in death by his parents, Leo and Marie (nee Hurych) Michalec, wife, Elaine (nee Sparr) Michalec in 1993; brothers, William and Harry Michalec; and sisters, Mary Webber and Frances McCardel. Friends may call Monday, August 2, 2010, from 4 - 8 p.m. at the Riddle Funeral Home, 5345 South Street, Vermilion Ohio. Family graveside services will be held Tuesday, August 3, 2010 at Maple Grove Cemetery, Vermilion. The Vermilion Veterans Council will conduct Military Honors.
