Charlotte D. Zakowski

Charlotte D. Zakowski passed on Monday, November 23, 2009. Charlotte (Chuckie) has dedicated her life to her husband, John Zakowski and her two daughters, Jacqueline Cooper of Spring Hill, Florida and Charlene Swendsboe of Nashua, New Hampshire and her 5 grandchildren and new great-grandson. Charlotte gave unselfishly to the City of Lorain. In 1960, she was the first woman elected to public office in the City of Lorain and served as City Treasurer for eight years. She was instrumental in starting International Lorain, served as Festival Chairman for almost 30 years and was the first Women to serve as President of Lorain International Association. She received the 25 Year Service Award from the Lorain Memorial Association and served as Treasurer of the Palace Civic Center. For countless years you would see Charlotte leading the award winning Polish Legion of American Veterans Women's Drill Team Post 38 in all the parades. Before all of the Lorain parades, you would see Charlotte early in the morning decorating the reviewing stand and running to change into her uniform. She was very proud of her veterans work and was rewarded with the Women of the Year, State of Ohio, the 75th Year United Polish Club Women of the Year and awards from the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps for her work in the Lorain Port Visitations. Charlotte served for 22 years as a Lorain Community Hospital volunteer and also was the Talent Coordinator for the Hospital "Follies" for many years She also served as President of the Hospital Auxiliary, on the Board of Directors and was the Arts and Crafts Director that decorated for all the the hospital events and well as creating beautiful gifts with her volunteers for the Treasure Chest. These are just a few of the highlights that Charlotte has achieved during her lifetime. Her dedication to the City and the multiple civic organizations will be greatly missed. Arrangements are being made through the Dombrowski and Humphrey Funeral Home. Mass for Charlotte will be at St. Peters Church on Monday, November 30, 2009 at 9:30 AM In lew of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to Lorain Community Health Partners Regional Foundation, 3700 Kolbe Road, Lorain, Ohio 44053.
