Clyde E. Harris, 96, of Vermilion, died Tuesday, March 16, 2021 at Admiral's Pointe, Huron after a lengthy illness. He was born April 26, 1924 in Oberlin and had been a Vermilion resident for the past 60 years moving from Firelands. Clyde and his wife Ruth, enjoyed spending winters in Leesburg, FL for the past 38 years. Clyde was a veteran of the US Navy serving during WWII where he crossed the North Atlantic 56 times on the a gasoline tanker Cherabuska, as a coxswain. Clyde worked for Thew Shovel as a Machine Shop Superintendent for 38 years retiring in 1982. He never missed a day of work. Clyde had also volunteered as an instructor with the Junior Achievement youth group. He was a member of South Amherst Methodist Church and a long time member of the Vermilion Boat Club. Clyde enjoyed boating, water-skiing, fishing, snow skiing, and cruising. He is survived by his wife of75 years, Ruth (nee Currier) Harris of Vermilion; sons, Richard (Barbara) Harris of Amherst and Gary (Nikki) Harris of Vermilion; daughter, Mary Jo Harris of Florence; his sidekick, Patricia Bates of Florence; grandchildren, Jonathon, Matthew, and Ryan Harris and Erica Kennett; and his great grandchildren, Ian, Nikolas, Piper, Oliver. He was preceded in death by his parents, Garfield and Ruth (nee Bryant) Harris; brothers, Elmer and Warren Harris; and his sister, Nina Eschke. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
