Dennis Earl Wohlever

Dennis Earl "Skip" Wohlever, 72 of Amherst, died Wednesday, September 12, 2007 at his home in Amherst after a lengthy illness. He was born July 28, 1935 in Amherst and graduated from Amherst High School with the class of 1954. He attended Ashland College for two years before entering the Pittsburgh School of Mortuary Science, graduating with honors with the class of 1960. He served his apprenticeship with the Emmerich Funeral Home and upon completion moved to Bellevue, purchasing the Young Funeral Home in 1962. In 1967 he purchased the Waters-Smith Funeral Home. He and his family spent the next 24 years operating the Wohlever Funeral Home. In 1984 he sold his funeral home in Bellevue and returned to Amherst, purchasing the Dombrowski Funeral Home, which became Dombowski-Wohlever-Volak Funeral Home until his retirement in 2000. He continued to be active in funeral service. He was a member of Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church in Lorain and served as usher when needed for many years. He was also a member of the Holy Name Society of the church. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 752 of Bellevue and was Grand Knight from 1966-1967. He was a member of the Ohio Funeral Directors and Ohio Embalmers Association, the Greater Lorain Funeral Directors (G.L.F.D.) Association. He was a past president of the former Huron County Funeral Directors know known as the Firelands Funeral Directors. Former member of the Bellevue Lions Club and a present member of the Lorain Lions Club and Honorary Associate Life Member of the Italian American Veterans Post 1 of Lorain. In his spare time he enjoyed fishing, boating, furniture refinishing and his yard work. He is survived by is wife of 48 years, Joan A. Wohlever (nee DeChiaro); daughters, Denise Smith of Norwalk, Deborah Kimbrel of Wakeman and Donna Sears of Bellevue; son, Dennis Wohlever II of Bellevue; 14 grandchildren; brother, Robert L. Wohlever of Granger, Illinois; sisters, Carol Dostall of Amherst and Priscilla Phillips of Vermilion. He was preceded-in-death by he parents, Robert L. and Myrtle M (nee Kurth) Wohlever, a sister, Barbara Ann and several aunts and uncles. Friends may call on Friday, September 14, 2007 from 1-4 and 6-9 pm at the Dombrowski-Humphrey-Riddle Funeral Home, 1939 Oberlin Avenue, Lorain. Closing prayers will be a the funeral home at 9:30 am on Saturday, September 15, 2007 followed by a 10:00 am Mass of Christian Burial at Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church, 418 W. 15th Street, Lorain. The Reverend Robert J. Glepko, pastor, and Reverend Mr. Robert Dybo, permanent deacon, will be the celebrants. Burial will be in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Amherst. Memorial contributions may be made to the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church, c/o roof and wall repair fund, 418 W. 15th Street, Lorain, Ohio 44052.
