Donald P. Nieding, 85, of Vermilion, passed away on Wednesday, September 4, 2024, at Kingston of Vermilion after a lengthy illness.
Born on April 23, 1939, in Amherst, OH, Don was a lifelong resident of Vermilion. He graduated from Vermilion High School and continued his education at the Oberlin School of Commerce, also attending Bowling Green State University.
Don served his country in the United States Army during the Berlin and Cuban missile crises. His career spanned 45 years at US Steel in Technical Service, where he retired in 2002.
He was an active member of the Vermilion Evangelical and Reformed Church, the Amherst American Legion, and was a life member of the Vermilion Amvets Post #22 and the Brownhelm Historical Society. Don also served four years on the Vermilion City Council representing Brownhelm Township and was a Certified Ohio Tree Farmer.
Don is survived by his devoted wife of 60 years, Rosalie (nee Nemeth) Nieding of Vermilion; brothers-in-law Bill Nemeth of Amherst and Dennis (Sharon) Szabo of New London; sisters-in-law Judy (Gary) Silvey of Avon Lake and Jo Ellen (Mark) Sciulli of Avon Lake; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ward and Margaret (nee Phillips) Nieding, and his beloved sons, David and Donald Nieding.
Family and friends are invited to gather on Wednesday, September 11, 2024, from 2:00 p.m. until the time of a memorial service at 4:00 p.m. at Riddle Funeral Home, 5345 South Street, Vermilion, Ohio. Rev. Dr. Jonathan Cheatham will officiate and military honors will be presented
