Donald V. Poplar, 89 of Lorain, died Wednesday, May 28, 2008 in Community Health Partners in Lorain following a sudden illness. He was born April 26, 1919 in Lorain and had been a lifelong resident. Don graduated from Lorain High School class of 1936B, then entered the United States Army in 1943. He served in Company A 347th Engineers in Normandy North France and Rhineland Central Europe. He received the Good Conduct Medal, WWII Victory Medal and European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with 4 bronze stars. He was also a bandsman, playing the trombone in the military band and dance orchestra. He worked for the US Steel Company as foreman for 44 years, retiring in 1981. He had also worked for The American Shipbuilding Company. Donald was a member of Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church in Lorain and its Holy Name Society. He was an avid golfer and once scored a hole in one. He bowled on the ABC Tours, enjoyed working around the house and yard, traveling and family. He was also an avid fictional reader and Snoopy fan. Survivors include his wife, Mary (nee Severa) Poplar of Lorain; son, David Poplar of Kipton; daughter, Barb Witter of Birmingham; daughter, Margie Cangiano of Ellicott City, Maryland; grandsons, Brian and Tony Witter; granddaughters, Carlyn Ramsdell and Marcy Lockerman; great-granddaughters, Adi Witter and Ava Lockerman. Preceding him in death were his parents, Stanley and Agnes (nee Stencil) Poplar. Friends may call Sunday June 1, 2008 from 4-7pm.at the Dombrowski-Humphrey-Riddle Funeral Home, 1939 Oberlin Avenue, Lorain, Ohio. The Holy Name Society will conduct a memorial Rosary service at 6:00 pm. Closing prayers will be said on Monday June 2, 2008 at 9:30 am at the funeral home followed by a 10:00 am Mass of Christian Burial at Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church, 418 W. 15th Street, Lorain. The Reverend Robert J. Glepko, pastor, will be the celebrant. Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery. Contributions may be made to the charity of donor�s choice.
