Edward Charles Andy, 80 of Lorain, died Saturday, July 7, 2007 in Autumn Aegis Nursing Home in Lorain following a lengthy illness. He was born September 5, 1926 in Florence, Ohio and has lived in Lorain for the past 12 years, moving from San Jose,California. He was a United States Army Veteran having served during World War II. He saw battle in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater and was the recipiant of a Bronze Battle Star. He grew up in Cleveland, attending the Cleveland Schools and the Cooper School of Art. He had worked as a tool and die maker and also on the Great Lakes ore boats before going into the Army. In 1967, Ed settled in San Jose, California and committed to a life changing program at the Salvation Army Adult Rehab Center. It was there that he gained sobriety and was able to use and build upon his artistic talents as a sign painter and clock repairman, where he gave over 25 years of service at the center. He had a great love for the game of Scrabble, starting a Scrabble Club in San Jose and entering regional and national tournaments. In 1979, Ed finished 14th in the National Competition in New York City. He also had a superior memory for statistics and trivia associated with the game of baseball and geography. Survivors include his wife of 20 years, Karin (nee Lucke) Andy of Lorain; step-sons, Michael Roesch of Oberlin and Eric Roesch of Pleasureville, KY; 3 step-grandsons; brother, Virgil T. Andy of Stow, Ohio; several nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were his parents, Edward R. and Rose (nee Shinsky) Andy, sisters, Geraldine Stepp, Loretta Grunstein and Laverne Almasi and one niece and one nephew. Friends may call on Thursday, July 12, 2007 from 10:00 am until the time of service at 11:00am at the Dombrowski-Humphrey-Riddle Funeral Home, 1939 Oberlin Avenue, Lorain. Life Celebrant Matt Humphrey will preside. A fellowship luncheon will follow in the funeral home community room. Private interment with military honors will be in the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery, Rittman, Ohio. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Salvation Army Adult Rehabilition Center, 760 W.Taylor St., San Jose, CA 95126.
