Elene Mae Mayer

Elene Mae Mayer (nee vander Oord), 87, of Vermilion, died Tuesday, January 10, 2023 at Mercy New Life Hospice after a brief illness.

She was born September 6, 1935 in Lorain and had been a Vermilion resident for the past 68 years moving from Brownhelm Twp.

Elene  worked as a Clerk-Treasurer for the Lorain Public Library for 26 years retiring in 1997. She also volunteered at St. Mary School as a Librarian after her retirement.

She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Parish, Vermilion, Catholic Ladies of Columbus, a lifetime member of AMVETS Post #22 Aux.; and the American Legion Post # 397 Aux.  She enjoyed bowling on the Monday's Ladies League at Lake Erie Lanes, collecting owls, cooking and baking, sewing, playing cards, car shows, casinos trips, and traveling.  She was also a Girl Scout Leader for her daughters and a tour guide at the Merry-Go-Round Museum, Sandusky.

She is survived by her husband of 68 years, Joseph B. Mayer of Vermilion; sons, Joseph (Connie) Mayer of Amherst and Dean (Kay) Mayer of Vermilion; daughters, Veronica (Philip) Vanden Bout of Vermilion, Nancy Mayer of Vermilion, Mary (David Good) Mayer of Vermilion, and Laura (Doug) Brown of Vermilion; grandchildren, Troy, Vanessa, Renee, Nicholas, Amanda, Kristen, Julie, Savannah, Adam, Joseph, Eric, Halle, Angela, and Dana, 22 great grandchildren with one on the way; sisters, Margaret Bates of Kipton and Dorothy Spence of Ypsilanti, MI; brother-in-law, Lester Mayer of Vermilion; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Pieter and Margaret (nee Monaghan) vander Oord; sister, Alida Leimbach; brother, Laurence vander Oord; and her son-in-law, Robert Beach III.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, Jan. 12, 2023 from 3-7 pm at the Riddle Funeral Home, 5345 South Street, Vermilion, Ohio. Prayers will be said at the funeral home on Friday, Jan. 13, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. followed by a 10:30 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary Parish, 731 Exchange Street, Vermilion, OH 44089.  Inurnment will take place at Maple Grove Cemetery at a later date.
