Ellen Basinski (nee Naughton), 84, of Vermilion, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 14, 2023 at her son's home surrounded by family after a brief illness.
She was born December 21, 1938 in Elyria, Ohio and had been a Vermilion resident for the past 14 years, moving from Elyria.
Ellen graduated from Mercy College, Detroit, Michigan and worked as an Elementary School teacher prior to starting a family.
She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Parish, Vermilion, Elyria Service League, Elyria City Planning Commission, a 31 year member of AA, and a past member of Elyria Country Club. She was also active with the Elyria Catholic High School where she would help with BINGO and was
a proud member of the Class of 1957. Ellen served on the board of directors with Birthright of Lorain County as well as The LCADA Way.
Ellen enjoyed cross stitch, summer vacations at Topsail Island and spending time with her family. After raising 5 boys she knew how to control
any situation, even an attempted burglary where she diffused the situation with a frying pan.
She is survived by her sons, David (Alice) Basinski of Copley, Daniel (Amy) Basinski of Amherst, Matthew (Cathy) Basinski of Lorain, Benjamin (Carri) Basinski of Avon Lake, and Michael Basinski of Elyria; grandchildren, Alexander Peter (Charlotte), Caitlyn Ellen, Colin Joseph, Cassidy Lilliane, Victoria Marie, Gabrielle Bernice, Jeremy Naughton, Nicole Scout, Jack David, Addison Scout, Cayden Peter, Emma Jeanne, Grayson Edward, Michael Patrick, and Hadley Marsha; and her sister, Margaret (Gary) Basinski of Annapolis, Maryland.
She was preceded in death by her husband, David Basinski in 2021 and her parents, Peter and Veronica (nee Radican) Naughton.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, February 19, 2023 from 12 pm to 4 pm at the Riddle Funeral Home, 5345 South Street, Vermilion, Ohio. Prayers will be said at the funeral home on Monday, February 20, 2023 at 10 am followed by a 10:30 am Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary Catholic Parish, 731 Exchange Street, Vermilion, OH. Interment will follow at Brownhelm Cemetery, Vermilion.
In Lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to: Naughton-Basinski Scholarship Fund at Elyria Catholic High School, Elyria; the Blessing House of Lorain; or Birthright of Lorain County.
