Elmer Root

Elmer R. "Dick" Root, 75 of Vermilion, died Tuesday, September 19, 2006 in New Life Hospice Center of St. Joseph, Lorain after a lengthy illness. He was born February 7, 1931 in Sandusky, Ohio and has been a Vermilion resident for the past 43 years moving from Toledo. He was a veteran of the US Army serving in the Korean War between 1948 and 1953. He worked as a truck driver for E&L Trucking, Lorain for 34 years retiring in 1992. He was a member of the VFW Post 7576, Amvets Post 22, both in Vermilion and Local 571 Teamsters. He enjoyed woodworking, fishing, working on cars, and traveling especially to Las Vegas. Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Lucille (nee Pohorecki), 3 sons: Dan Root of Toledo, Rich Root of Vermilion, and Ted Root of Atlanta , GA; 3 daughters: Deb Roughton of Toledo, Theresa Vargo- Pabon of Vermilion, and Linda Burgraff-Zander of Vermilion; 15 grandchildren, and 8 great grandchildren. Preceding him in death were his parents, Elmer R. and Ethel (nee Ruff); 3 brothers: Jim, David, and Bob Root and sister Betty Doty. Friends may call Friday, September 22, 2006 from 2-4 and 7-9 pm at the Riddle Funeral Home, 5345 South Street, Vermilion, Ohio. Services will be held at the Riddle Funeral Home, Saturday, September 23, 2006 at 11:00 am. Interment will follow in Resthaven Memory Gardens, Avon. Contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association of Ohio South Shore, 6800 West Central Avenue D-1, Toledo, Ohio 43617.
