Ernest S. Chonko Jr., 73, of Vermilion, passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, following a lengthy illness.
Born on June 25, 1952, in Lorain, Ohio, Ernest was a lifelong resident of the Vermilion and Amherst communities.
Ernest dedicated many years of service to Republic Steel, where he worked as a loader and operator for over 30 years until his retirement in 2008.
He was a member of AMVETS Post #22 and a former member of VFW Post #7576. Ernest enjoyed attending and watching NASCAR races, traveling to Las Vegas, visiting casinos, and taking drives in his beloved Camaro. He was known for his love of family, his loyal companionship, and his enjoyment of life's simple pleasures.
He is survived by his lifelong companion, Bobbie Davidson of Vermilion; his son, Steven Chonko of North Royalton; daughters, Stephanie Chonko of Amherst and Emily Chonko of Elyria; grandchildren, Julian and Gabriella; his cherished cat, Molly; half-brothers, Jimmy and Tim Cuevas; his sister, Libby (Freddie) Cuevas and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest S. Chonko and Dixie Chonko (née Childers) and his nephews, Eric and David Cuevas.
Graveside services will be held Monday, June 29, 2026, at 12 Noon at Birmingham Cemetery.
