Eugene R. “Buddy” Allen Jr., 93, of Vermilion, passed away Thursday, January 1, 2026, at Avon Oaks Caring Community after a lengthy illness.
He was born October 12, 1932, in Harriman, Tennessee, and had been an Avon Lake resident for over 40 years, previously living in Vermilion.
Buddy proudly served his country as a veteran of the United States Navy at the time of the Korean War. After his military service, he began driving car carriers for Ford Motor Company, first in St. Louis then for the Lorain Assembly plant. Buddy's affinity for work and his ambition led him to go into business for himself in the 1960's. He started Allen Trailer Sales as a dealership for Great Dane trailers and New ERA Trucking which hauled freight from the 1970's to the early 2020's. He took great pride in owning and operating his businesses and was known for reliability of delivery and a strong work ethic.
Though operating his businesses was Buddy's primary focus, he also enjoyed classic cars, swimming, and spending time with fellow veterans as a member of the VFW Post 7035 and the Masonic Temple.
He is survived by his daughter, Julie (Bob) Cox; stepson, James Renfro; grandchildren, Sarah (Huw) Cox James and Jeffrey Cox; brother, Randy (Mary Ann) Allen; and sisters, Joy Tabb and Freida Breazeal.
He was preceded in death by his son, Toby Noel Allen; his parents, Eugene R. Allen, Sr. and Loraine (née Williams) Giles; and his brothers-in-law, Bobby Tabb and John Breazeal.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
The family suggests memorial contributions to Alzheimer's Association 3 Summit Park Drive, #550, Independence, OH 44131 or VFW Post 7035, 36950 Mills Rd Avon, OH 44011.
