Eugene Gerald McConville, 94, of Vermilion, passed away on Friday, August 30, 2024 at Mercy New Life Hospice.
Born on March 15, 1930 in Martins Ferry, OH, Eugene grew up in Cleveland, graduated from St. Ignatius High School and received a Bachelor’s degree from John Carroll University. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Parish and the Olympic Outing Club; he enjoyed competitive pursuits-tennis, spades, bocce to name a few. Above all, he loved spending time with his grandchildren.
Loving, compassionate and dedicated to service, Eugene faithfully served in combat duty for the US Army in the Korean War, volunteering for the most dangerous duties. After the war, he returned to Ohio to complete a bachelor’s degree from John Carroll University. In 1956 he married Jean Dorsey, and moved to New York to start a 34-year career as a Buyer at the JC Penney headquarters in Manhattan. Eugene, Jean and their children summered in Vermilion, and Eugene and Jean eventually retired year-round to Vermilion until his death.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Jean Elizabeth (nee Dorsey) McConville; sons, James (Irene Costello) McConville of East Hampton NY, Brion (Linda) McConville of Glen Cove, NY, Bill (Yanira) McConville of Glen Cove, NY, Matthew (Renee van der Stelt) McConville of Baldwin, MD, Daniel McConville of Yarmouth, ME, and Kevin McConville of South Hampton, NY; daughters, Carrie McConville of Vermilion, OH and Holly McConville of Ronkonkoma, NY; and many beloved grandchildren and great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Margaret (nee O'Donnell) McConville; brothers, James McConville, Daniel McConville, and John McConville, and his sisters, Janet Segel and Mary Margaret Jarmusch.
His life will be celebrated on Saturday, September 28, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at a funeral Mass at St. Mary Catholic Parish, 731 Exchange Street, Vermilion. Inurnment will be at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery, Seville at a later date.
