Evelyn 'Nuggie' Cook

VERMILION - Evelyn "Nuggie" Cook (nee: Hayes), 89, of Vermilion, died Monday, August 12, 2013 at home surrounded by her loved ones. She was born on January 23, 1924 in Owosso, Michigan and had been a Vermilion Resident since 1929. She graduated from the Oberlin School of Commerce and was a receptionist for Wakefield Brass Co, in Vermilion. She also worked for Cook Radio & TV, Murray Ridge School,Vermilion Board of Education and as a nursery school teacher. She was a devout member of United Church of Christ Congregational, Vermilion where she considered the members her extended family. She served her church in many ways: coordinated Meals on Wheels, volunteered for the food pantry, sang in the choir, played in the bell choir, served as Sunday school superintendent and teacher, lay minister, moderator, and mission coordinator. She was a Girl Scout leader, a lifetime member of Eastern Star, a member of the VFW Auxiliary in Vermilion, and AmVets. She enjoyed playing piano for residents of Mill Manor and the Ohio Veterans Home. She always made a point of going out of her way to cheer people up and bring smiles to faces. She was proud of her herb garden. . She is survived by her sister Maxine Schmitz of Vermilion; children, Linda (Jim) Estle, Nancy (Tim) Montgomery, and Ginny (Rick) Browne of Vermilion, Cindy (Rich) Wasem of Amherst and John (Monica) Cook of Bellevue: 11 grandchildren, 2 surrogate grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ernest and Ella (nee: Turner) Hayes; brothers Ross Hayes and Harry Hayes; and husband, Clayton Cook in 1999. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, at 2 PM in United Church of Christ Congregational, Vermilion.
