Fern L. Haughwout (nee Ladrach), 100, of Brownhelm Twp., died Saturday, April 4, 2015 at Kingston of Vermilion after a short illness. She was born June 10, 1914 in Brownhelm and called Brownhelm Twp. her home. However, she had also lived in Berea, North Ridgeville, Wisconsin and was a resident of Bradenton, FL for 40 years. During WWII, Fern worked as a "Doughgirl" and was trained to be a code breaker in Washington, DC. She then worked at Higbee's, Cleveland as a sales associate for many years. Fern was a member of Brownhelm Congregational United Church of Christ and St. George's Episcopal Church, Bradenton. Fern had earned her private pilots license and enjoyed flying, traveling the world, crossword puzzles, playing BINGO, and spending time with her family, friends, and neighbors. Fern also enjoyed writing for the Florida mobile home association monthly newsletter, volunteering at Manatee Memorial Hospital, and driving for Meals on Wheels. She is survived by many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lefferd Haughwout; parents, Emanuel and Louise M.(nee Bauman) Ladrach; brothers, Maurice, Howard, and Warren "Bud" Ladrach; sisters, Lynn Lund, Ruth Todd Griffin, and Christine Niggle; niece, Evelyn Kay Wheelock; nephews, Millard Todd, John Lund and George Griffin. Graveside services will be held Friday, April 17, 2015 at 1:00 pm at the Brownhelm Cemetery, Vermilion. The Rev. Louis Bertoni and Rev. Elizabeth Terril will co-officiate.
