Ferne L Blackman (nee Lafferty), 91, of Vermilion, died Wednesday, December 4, 2013 at Kingston of Vermilion. Ferne was born February 8, 1922 in Lakewood. She had been coming to Vermilion since she was a young girl and moved permanently in 1970. Her family bought Vermilion River Park in the 1930s She was a graduate of Baldwin Wallace College where she was a member of Delta Zeta Sorority. She was an active member of the United Church of Christ,Vermilion and was interested in Bible Study, Bridge Club and Book Club. She was a member of the Delta Zeta Alumni Association and had been a trustee of Ritter Public Library for many years. She played in Vermilion YMCA Bridgerama and enjoyed reading, swimming and boating. She is survived by her daughter, Suzanne (Michael) Hiscox of Portland, OR; sons, Brice (Adelyn) Blackman and David (Constance) Blackman both of Vermilion; foster son, William McClellan of Cleveland; grandchildren, Kimberly (Michael ) Havenstein, Jill (Mark) Mader, Jennifer (Bill) Calkins, Allison (Kenneth) Moskowitz, Alexis Manhertz, and Kellie (Sean) Bowers, 16 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews She was preceded in death by her husband, Calvin Charles Blackman in 1998, parents, E. Brice and Carrie (nee Dunn) Lafferty, brothers, Robert L. and Earle Lafferty. The family will receive friends on Friday, Dec. 13, 2013 from noon until the time of a Memorial Service at 1 p.m. at the United Church of Christ Congregational , 990 State Street, Vermilion, Ohio 44089. The Reverend Bob Richardson will officiate. Riddle Funeral Home, 5345 South Street, Vermilion is entrusted with arrangements.
