Fred R. Claus, 96, of Vermilion, passed away Friday, March 27, 2026, at Kingston of Vermilion after a lengthy illness.
He was born June 11, 1929, in Wellington, Kansas, and had been a Vermilion resident for the past 20 years, moving from Bay Village. He grew up on a family farm with four siblings. Life during the Depression brought challenges, but it also shaped his strong work ethic and resilience.
Fred attended the University of Nebraska, earning a degree in Chemical Engineering. After graduation, he served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War as a First Lieutenant in an ordnance disposal unit stationed in Western Germany. In 1952, he married his life partner, Shirley Snell, beginning a devoted marriage that lasted more than 70 years.
Following his military service, Fred worked for Union Carbide for more than 30 years. His career took him around the world-including South Korea, Japan, Jamaica, and Russia-where he contributed to improving engineering processes at various chemical facilities.
Fred was a dedicated husband, father, and grandfather. He and Shirley raised three children and were blessed with four grandchildren. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing, hunting, and golfing. The couple owned several properties in Florida and spent their winters there while maintaining a home in Vermilion for more than 20 years.
He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Vermilion and American Legion Post #397, and he was a past member of the Kiwanis Club.
Fred is survived by his son, Russell (Jill) Claus of Vermilion Township; daughters Mary Ann (Pavel Safer) Claus of Vermilion and Carol (Ken) Klemencic; four grandchildren, and a sister, Margie.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley J. (Snell) Claus; his parents, Fred S. and Lena (Ellig) Claus; and a brother, Paul Claus.
Private services will be held.
