Garry L. Martin, 76, of Lorain, passed away Friday, September 18, 2026, at his home following a lengthy illness.
He was born April 1, 1950, in Lorain, Ohio, and had been a Lorain resident for the past 42 years, having previously lived in Vermilion.
Garry was a 1969 graduate of Vermilion High School, where he was a standout football player. He continued his education at Western New Mexico University, where he earned a degree in Physical Education with a minor in History. He began his career as a physical education teacher at St. Mary Catholic School in Vermilion. He later began his career with Ford Motor Company in Avon Lake, where he worked for 31 years before retiring in 2007 as a PMHV trainer.
Garry was a member of UAW Local 2000, where he served as a trustee. An avid softball player, he played for many teams throughout the years and was inducted into the UAW Softball Hall of Fame. He also participated in the Senior Olympics, where he won a bronze medal.
Garry enjoyed many activities, including working out each morning with friends, playing basketball, camping, and relaxing in the hot tub. Above all, he treasured the time he spent with his family and friends. He was always quick to make friends and loved by everyone he met.
He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Irene (nee Evaro) Martin of Lorain; daughter, Jenny (Matthew) Reer of Port Clinton; son, Garry J. Martin of Lorain; grandchildren, Aryanna and Ashton; great-grandson, Angelo; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, William Martin; his mother and stepfather, Arlene R. (nee Friday) and Eugene F. Redinger; and his brother and sister-in-law, Barry and Judith Martin.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Riddle Funeral Home, 5345 South Street, Vermilion, Ohio. Funeral services will be held Thursday, September 24, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. Pastor Brandon Stewart will officiate. Interment will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery, Vermilion.
The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the American Heart Association, 1375 East 9th Street, #600, Cleveland, OH 44114.
