George A Gvist

George A Gvist, 78, of Amherst, died Monday, February 8, 2016 at Mercy Regional Medical Center after a short illness. He was born February 22, 1937 in Lakewood and had been an Amherst resident for the past 28 years moving from Vermilion. George graduated from Firelands High School and worked as an inspector for Ford Motor Co., Lorain, retiring in 1994 after 35 years. He also retired from the Naval Reserves, Lorain serving for 25 years. After George retired from Ford, he worked several years at Ohio E-Check. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Vermilion, and former parishioner of Holy Trinity, Lorain, where he is a member of Holy Trinity Senior. He was a member of Amvets Post #22, Vermilion and a life member of the Slovak Club, Lorain. He was also on the education committee of Local #425 retiree. George enjoyed traveling, casinos, crossword puzzles, reading, yard work, watching the Cleveland Browns, and puttering in his man cave. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Joan Gvist of Amherst; son, Dr. Mark (Lou Ann) Gvist of Des Moines, Iowa; daughters, Monica Ann Gvist of Lorain, Marjorie (Czipa) Gvist of Amherst, and Melissa Gvist of Amherst; and grandson, Christian Gvist of Houston, TX . He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Anna (nee Simek) Gvist, mother and father-in-law, John and Josephine Beursken; grandson, Andrew Gvist; brother, Eugene Gvist, cousin, George Simek, and son-in-law, Donald Czipa, The family will receive friends on Thursday, February 11, 2016, from 4-8 pm at the Riddle Funeral Home, 5345 South Street, Vermilion, where the Vermilion Veterans Council will conduct military honors at 7:30 pm. Prayers will be said at the funeral home on Friday , February 12, 2016 at 10:00 am followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 am at St. Mary Catholic Church, 731 Exchange Street, Vermilion. The Reverend Ron Brickner will officiate. Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain.
