George E. Phillips

George E. Phillips, 82, of Vermilion, died Sunday, June 11, 2017 at his home after a brief illness. He was born February 22, 1935 in Lorain and had been a life long Vermilion resident. George was a veteran of the US Army. George owned and operated Valley Harbor Marina, a full service marina with 400 docks located on the Vermilion river. George's life revolved around boats and the marina, which he built in 1966. He had also served as Service Director for the City of Vermilion for 18 years. George was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church,Vermilion. He had served on the Vermilion Port Authority; and enjoyed traveling (especially one day road trips), breaking ice on the Vermilion River, and spending time with his family. George was awarded the Carnegie Medal of Honor for rescuing people with his boat during the 1969 flood in Vermilion. He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Dolores (nee Kuhn) Phillips of Vermilion; sons, David Phillips of Vermilion, Dan Phillips of Vermilion, and Darren Phillips of Indian Lake; granddaughters, Stacey Maczulis and Terren (Tim) Paine both of Vermilion; great grandchildren, Makenzie and Macie; brother, Ronald "Ronnie" Phillips of Amherst; and step children, Chris Luke and Stephanie Lukovics. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Sarah "Sally" Phillips and his parents, Earl and Martha (nee Garber) Phillips The family will receive friends on Wednesday, June 14, 2017 from 3-7 pm at the Riddle Funeral Home, 5345 South Street, Vermilion, Ohio. The Vermilion Veterans Council will conduct Military Honors at 7 pm at the funeral home. Prayers will be said at the funeral home on Thursday, June 15, 2017 at 9:30 am followed by a 10:00 am Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary Catholic Church, 731 Exchange Street, Vermilion, OH. Inurnment will take place at Maple Grove Cemetery at a later date. The family suggests memorial contributions to St. Mary Catholic Church, 731 Exchange Street, Vermilion, OH 44089 or the Vermilion Port Authority, 777 West River Rd., Vermilion, OH 44089 Online condolences may be made at www.riddlefuneralhome.com.
