Gerald Elden DeWitt, 76, of Vermilion, died Wednesday, July 29, 2015 at his home after a lengthy illness. Gerald was born July 11, 1939 in White, PA, and had been a Vermilion resident since 1976 moving from Lorain. Gerald worked in various capacities including working as a truck driver for Ford Motor Co., Lorain for 39 years, retiring in 1997. He attended Lakeview Baptist Church, Vermilion, and was a member of the UAW Local #425 and American Legion Post #397. He enjoyed woodcarving, playing horseshoes, spending time with his family, and he especially enjoyed attending his grandchildren's sporting events. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Veronica Elaine (nee Merkly) of Vermilion; son, Gerald V, (Pamela ) DeWitt of Vermilion; daughters, Coylette DeWitt and Tonya (Brad) Montgomery both of Vermilion; 8 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; and a brother, Darrell DeWitt of Lorain. He was preceded in death by his parents, Milton and Margaret (nee Chrisman) DeWitt, and brother, Glendale DeWitt. The family will receive friends on Saturday, August 1, 2015 from 4 until the time of a celebration of life service at 6 pm at Lakeview Baptist Church, 591 Ferndale Ave., Vermilion, OH. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions to the American Cancer Society Ohio Division Inc., 10501 Euclid Avenue, Cleveland, OH 44106 .
