Gerald D. Johnson, 70, of Vermilion, died Monday, November 4, 2013 at New Life Hospice Center of St. Joseph after a short illness. Gerald was born February 27, 1943 in Greenville, SC, and had been a Vermilion resident for the past 43 years, moving from Lorain. He was a veteran of the US Army serving during the Vietnam War. Gerald worked for Ford Motor Co. Lorain as a assembler for 30 years retiring in 1998. He had also worked for the Amherst Turnpike Plaza for 15 years. He had been a member of the Vermilion Evangelical and Reformed Church and the UAW #425. He enjoyed bowling, fishing, and race cars. Gerald was a sports enthusiast rooting for Cleveland sports teams and the Clemson Tigers. He loved life and spending time with his family and friends. He is survived by his sons, Phillip Johnson and John (Tiffany) Johnson both of Vermilion; daughter, Lisa (Sean) Barnhill of Vermilion; grandchildren Jacob Huffman, Taylor and Anthony Barnhill, and Lucez Moralez; and brother, Gene Johnson of Pelion, SC. He was preceded in death by his wife Renee Johnson in 2000, infant daughter, Dawn; parents William Roosevelt and Pauline (nee George) Johnson; and brothers, Bill, John and Lewis Johnson The family will receive friends on Thursday, November 7, 2013 from 2-4 and 7-9 pm at the Riddle Funeral Home, 5345 South Street, Vermilion. Funeral services will be Friday Nov. 8, 2013 at 11 am at the funeral home. The Reverend Nick Cacciatore will officiate. Interment will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery, Vermilion, where the Vermilion Veterans Council will conduct military honors. Online condolences may be made at www.riddlefuneralhome.com.
