Gerald "Jerry" Dale Schmidt, aged 90, peacefully passed away on Saturday, January 13, 2024, at Mercy New Life Hospice in Lorain, following a brief illness.
Born on February 24, 1933, in Vermilion, OH, Gerald was a lifelong resident of the community. Graduating from Vermilion High School in 1951, he proudly served his country in the US Navy on the USS St. Paul, initiating his career as a mailman. Gerald dedicated an impressive 37 years to the US Postal Service, retiring after a fulfilling service in 1989. Alongside his wife, Virginia, he also owned and operated Hawkins Flowers Shop in Vermilion for many years.
A devoted member of the Church of the Nazarene in Vermilion for 60 years, Gerald leaves behind a legacy of faith and commitment. He was also an esteemed member of VFW Post #7576. Gerald found joy in flower and plant gardening, as well as passionately cheering on the Cleveland Browns and Cleveland Guardians.
Survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Virginia (nee Rooy) Schmidt, daughter Julie (Tom Nielsen) Schmidt-Lee of Vermilion, son David Schmidt of Vermilion, grandchildren Jolene, Gretchen, and Rick, brother Wayne (Marylyn) Schmidt of Wakeman, and sisters Alice Barry of Oregon, OH, Carol (Ron) Baaske of Vermilion, and Nancy (Dave) Gastin of Shelby, OH.
Gerald was preceded in death by his parents, Emil and Francis (nee Lipps) Schmidt, brother Edward (Margaret) Schmidt, and brother-in-law Herb Barry.
Friends and family may call on Feb. 24, 2024 from 11:00 a.m. until the time of a Celebration of Life service at 12 Noon at the Church of the Nazarene, 14907 Kneisel Rd., Vermilion, OH 44089. Military Honors will also be presented at 12 Noon.
