Gilbert V. Saltis, 93, lifelong resident of Lorain, died unexpectedly Friday, December 23, 2011 at his residence. Gilbert was born in Pennsylvania the son of the late August and Mary (nee Meisner) Saltis. He was a veteran of the United States Navy serving during W.W.II. Gilbert was a carpenter for U.S. Steel retiring in 1979, and prior to that had worked at Black River Lumber. He was a member of Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church, and the Polish Fishermen's Club. He enjoyed camping, fishing, woodcarving, and crossword puzzles. Gilbert is survived by son's Eugene Saltis of Mission Viejo, CA, Thomas (Deborah) Saltis of Vermilion, and Denis Saltis of Lorain; daughter Diane (Michael) Zagrobelny of Altamonte Springs, FL; six grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren. Along with his parents he was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years Eleanor Veronica (nee Sadowski) on November 6, 2011, one brother, and one sister. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church 418 W. 15th St., Lorain Wednesday December 28, 2011 at 10:00 A.M.. Father Jerry Keller will officiate. Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain. The family suggests memorial contributions to the American Heart Association Box 634445, Cincinnati, OH 45263, or a mass in Gilbert's name to the church of their choice.
