Gordon Ray Akers, 70, of Vermilion, died Friday, April 17, 2015 at Mercy Regional Medical Center after a short illness. He was born September 4, 1944 in Corinne, WV, and had been a Vermilion resident for the past 20 years moving from Maryland. Gordon worked for Carter Lumber, Vermilion as a sales associate for over 10 years, retiring in 2003. He had attended Lakeview Baptist Church, Vermilion and was a member of the VFW Post #7576; American Legion Post #397; and Sons of AMVETS Post #22. Gordon enjoyed working on cars and babysitting his granddaughters. He is survived by his son, Michael Akers of Vermilion; daughters, Patti (Ken) Rich of Baltimore, MD, Laura Anderson of Vermilion, and Tonia Akers of Vermilion; step son, Scott Vermillion of Hedgesville, WV; 12 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren; and brothers, Berman Akers of MD and Andy Akers of KY He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Irene Akers and his companion, Linda M. McCloskey in 2000. The family will receive friends on Saturday, April 25, 2015 from 4-7 pm at the Riddle Funeral Home, 5345 South Street, Vermilion OH. Private inurnment will take place at Maple Grove Cemetery, Vermilion.
