Griff MacDougall

Griff MacDougall, 77, of Vermilion, passed away Tuesday, December 16, 2025, at his home after a short illness.

He was born October 19, 1948, in Sandusky, Ohio, and had been a Vermilion resident for the past 52 years.

Griff proudly served his country as a veteran of the United States Army during the Vietnam War and was awarded the Bronze Star for his service.

He was employed by FirstEnergy, where he worked as a stationary engineer and boiler operator until his retirement.

Griff enjoyed traveling, fishing, playing cards, old cars, motorcycles, going to the movie theater, and camping. He especially cherished his regular breakfast outings with his brother, Terry. Griff was a dedicated Alcoholics Anonymous sponsor and took great pride in helping many others along their recovery journey. Above all, he loved his family and caring for his beloved dogs, Penny and Baby.

He is survived by his children, Dewona (Dennis) Short, Laura (William) Ashworth, Janeen Kuczkowski, Isabell Hammond, Scott (Susan) Payne, and Dewaine Hobbs; his grandchildren, Walter, Ruby, Joy, Amber, Cameron, Destiny, Lyrick, Justin, Amelia, Elizabeth, Austin, Jenna, Katy, and Matthew; five great-grandchildren; and his brothers, Terry (Denise) MacDougall and Greg (Sandie) MacDougall.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 33 years, Ruby L. MacDougall (née Richardson), in 2008; his parents, Paul and Isabell MacDougall (née Parker); his son-in-law, Barry Hammond; and his sisters, Eileen Allen and Corrine Lopatkovich.

The family will receive friends on Friday, December 19, 2025, from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Riddle Funeral Home, 5345 South Street, Vermilion, Ohio. Funeral services will be held Saturday, December 20, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. at the funeral home, with Greg MacDougall officiating. Interment will follow at Ridge Hill Memorial Park in Amherst, where the Veterans Council will conduct military honors.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to an animal or veteran organization of the donor’s choice.
