Harmon Martin, 73, of Vermilion, died Saturday, October 22, 2016 at his son's home after a lengthy illness. He was born July 18, 1943 in Rogers, OH and had been a Vermilion resident for the past 40 years moving from Connecticut. Harmon was a veteran of the US Army where he served as a MP Dog Handler. Harmon worked as a welder for 40 years and as a heavy equipment operator with the Operating Engineers Local 18 for the past 10 years, He was a member of Grace Church of Columbiana, AMVETS Post #22, and American Legion Post #397. He excelled at coaching baseball and won three championships. He coached from Little League up to Hot Stove. He was the first coach to bring Hot Stove Baseball to Vermilion and always took the players to Dairy Dock for ice cream whether they won or lost. Harmon was a sports enthusiast and enjoyed following the Green Bay Packers, Indians, Cavs, and Ohio State. He will be remembered as a caring person who took in several foster children. He kept a positive attitude joking with the doctors and nurses even when he was sick. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Alice (nee Butson) Martin of Vermilion; son, David (Kimberly) Martin of Vermilion; grandchildren: Jacob, Eric, Robin, Tiffany, and Sean; 7 great grandchildren; brother, Walter John Martin of Columbus; sister, Shirley Martin of Columbiana, OH; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Nathaniel and Edria (nee Butler) Martin; brothers, William Lee Martin, Charles "Shug" Butler, and James Martin; and sister, Bettie Jean Martin. The family will receive friends on Thursday, October, 27, 2016 from 3:00 until the time of a memorial service at 5:00 pm at the Riddle Funeral Home, 5345 South Street, Vermilion, Ohio. Military Honors will be presented by the Vermilion Veterans Council just prior to the Memorial Service at 5:00 pm.
