Herbert Charles Myers

Herbert Charles Myers Jr., 92, of Vermilion, died Monday, November 2, 2009 at New Life Hospice Center of St. Joseph, Lorain. He was born December 31, 1916 in Lakewood and has been a Vermilion resident since 1928. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy amphibious forces, and served in the 7th Beach Battalion in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans during WWII. He worked as a machinist for Thew Shovel, Lorain, for 30 years and also worked for the Cleveland Waterproof Paper Company. He had also worked for 22 years in the hardware department at Buyers Fair, Vermilion, retiring in 1999. Mr. Myers graduated from Vermilion High School in 1934 and completed courses in drafting. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, AMVETS Post #22, Vermilion and the American Legion Post #424. He sailed boats to Flordia, raced sailboats out of Glouster Maine and was the first inland seas racer to compete in the World Cup Races. He was a 4th degree member of the Knights of Columbus and enjoyd golf and bowling. He is survived by his wife, Marguerite (nee Koenig); daughter, Mary Lynn ( Frank) Homitz; son, Lee Charles (Kathy) Myers both of Vermilion, 3 grandchildren, Renee, Mathew and Annette and 2 great-grandchildren, Bear and Skyler He was preceded in death by his brother, Kenneth H. Myers and his parents, Dr. Herbert and Caroline (nee Schumacher) Myers. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, November 4, 2009 from 4-8 p.m. at the Riddle Funeral Home, 5345 South Street, Vermilion, Ohio. Prayers will be said in the funeral home, Thursday, November 5, 2009 at 8:30 a.m.followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church, 731 Exchange Street, Vermilion. Interment will follow in Maple Grove Cemetery, Vermilion. The Vermilion Veterans Council will conduct military services. The family suggests memorial contributions to St. Mary Catholic School, 731 Exchange Street, Vermilion.
