Jack Delano Hook, aged 89, passed away peacefully at his Vermilion residence on November 15, 2023, following a lengthy illness. Born on March 18, 1934, in Leipsic, OH, he resided in Vermilion for 55 years after relocating from Lorain.
Jack served his country as a distinguished Navy veteran. His commitment extended to education, where he devoted 30 years as the esteemed Superintendent for Vermilion City Schools until his retirement in 1990. Jack was especially proud of the Vermilion School District. His heart and energy were with the people (teachers, students, custodians, food service, transportation, administrators, and board members). He loved walking the buildings and grounds.
A man deeply involved in community service, Jack was an active member of the Vermilion United Church of Christ Congregational. His leadership in Vermilion Rotary, including a term as president and recognition with the Paul Harris Award, showcased his dedication. He contributed his insights to the Vermilion Chamber of Commerce and served on the advisory board for Society Bank. His involvement in education continued through membership in the Buckeye Association of School Administrators. Additionally, he was an enthusiastic member of the Vermilion Investment Club.
Beyond his professional pursuits, Jack embraced various hobbies, from remodeling and woodworking to indulging in European and Russian history literature and furniture refinishing. His love for exploration took him across the United States, Europe, and China.
Jack is survived by his beloved wife of 69 years, Mary (nee Brobst) Hook, and his sons: Brian (Donna) of Beaufort, SC; David of Fort Lauderdale, FL; and Darrin (Leslie) of Eden Prairie, MN. His memory lives on through his cherished grandchildren: Lauren, Allison, Benjamin, Nathaniel, and Ethan, as well as his great-granddaughter, Mary Marshall.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Curtis and Caroline (nee Walters) Hook, and his sister, Maureen R. Stanfield.
The family will receive friends on Friday, November 17, 2023 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Riddle Funeral Home, 5345 South Street, Vermilion, Ohio. Funeral services will take place on Saturday, November 18, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. at the United Church of Christ Congregational, 990 State Street, Vermilion, OH. Interment with military honors will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery, Vermilion.
