Jack Dean Smith, 80, passed away on November 18, 2023, at Mercy New Life Hospice. Born on April 9, 1943, in Elyria, he spent most of his life in Amherst, also treasuring his time spent with Nancy at their cabin in Wakeman.
Jack's career spanned teaching English at various community colleges, including Lorain County Community College, BGSU-Firelands Campus, and Ashland University. He also owned and operated Fireland's Country Store.
His passions included writing and immersing himself in poetry, short stories, and essays. He co-founded The Black River Review and found joy in exploring American Indian History, fly fishing, black powder rifle shooting, and land preservation.
Jack is survived by his wife of 27 years, Nancy (nee Lincicome) Smith of Amherst; daughters, Amanda (Bryan) Smith of Houston, TX, and Clarissa Smith of Austin, TX; grandchildren, Grant, Addison, and Leif; brother, Alan Smith; as well as Nancy's children and family who embraced and admired him.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Joseph and Maxine (nee Fye) Smith.
Family and friends are invited to a gathering on Wednesday, November 22, 2023, starting at 11:00 a.m. until a time of sharing at 1:00 p.m. at the Riddle Funeral Home, 5345 South Street, Vermilion, Ohio. A private interment will be held at Brownhelm Cemetery, Vermilion.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to NAMI, 4301 Wilson Blvd., Suite 300, Arlington, VA 22203.
