James S. Crum, 71 of Vermilion, died Sunday, September 6, 2009 in Specialty Hospital of Lorain after a lengthy illness. He was born May 2, 1938 in Inez, KY and has been a Vermilion resident since 1967 moving from Lorain. He worked as a carpenter, assistant foreman, and drawbridge operator for Norfolk Southern railroad for 42 years, retiring in 1999. James enjoyed working on cars, fishing, golfing, and carpentry work. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, MaryJane Crum (nee Stegman); daughters, Elizabeth Johnson of Vermilion and Peggy (Guy) Scardami of Lorain; son, James Matthew Crum of Vermilion, 2 grandchildren, Stephanie Johnson and Justin Scardami; and 3 sisters, Clora Thacker of Columbus, Anna Watkins and Nannie Johnson both of Athens. Preceding him in death were his parents, George and Rinda (nee Stepp) Crum, sisters, Nola Mae Adams, Ima Jean Preece, and Doris "Dodie" Preece, and brothers, Delbert and Benny Joe Crum. Friends may call Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2009 from 4-8 pm at the Riddle Funeral Home, 5345 South Street, Vermilion, Ohio. Graveside services will be held Wednesday, Sept. 9, 2009 at 10 am at Brownhelm Cemetery, Vermilion. Rev. Mike Levelle will officiate.
